Mobility and Housing Futures: Lessons from COVID-19 and the 2020 Bushfires

The pandemic has had major impacts on people’s mobility and activity. What might this mean for Mobility and Activity after the pandemic? In the case of housing the pandemic itself seems to have been connected with housing conditions, but also occupants and investors have been using their housing very differently during the pandemic. What are the lessons for the housing market and future housing policy?

Professor David Levinson joined the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney in 2017 as Foundation Professor in Transport Engineering.. He conducts research on Accessibility, Transport Economics, Transport Network Evolution, and Transport and Land Use Interaction. He is the Founding Editor of Transport Findings and the Journal of Transport and Land Use. He is the author of several books including: The Transportation Experience, Planning for Place and Plexus, The 30-Minute City, A Political Economy of Access, Elements of Access, and The End of Traffic and the Future of Access. Professor Nicole Gurran is Chair of Urbanism at the University of Sydney, where she leads Urban Housing Lab@Sydney and directs the University’s AHURI (Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute) research centre. Nicole’s research focuses on intersections between urban planning and the housing system and she has led and collaborated on a series of studies on aspects of urban policy, housing, sustainability and planning, funded by AHURI, the Australian Research Council, as well as state and local government. Her current research is examining affordable rental supply, informal housing provision, and the impacts of online holiday rental platforms for local communities.
